Perceiving Nature
Time for a new artist statement after the opening in Atlanta.
My work is an exploration of nature—my attempt to describe the natural world that influences me. But at the same time, I’m making paintings, and my thesis so to speak, is about paint: not skies and water, trees and clouds. A natural deconstruction of imagery takes place in the rendering, a break with the literal. By allowing the medium to emerge—flowing marks, moving paint, surface textures—I am approaching an interpretation of the sublime in nature. Nature doesn’t care whether we look or not. The most awe-inspiring visual moments in the landscape: sunrise and sunset for example, can appear the most trivial when painted. Finding a language to describe my discoveries, to lead a viewer to see these intimate details, is the goal of my work.
